Ranveer Singh’s latest release, Cirkus, ended its first week with a nett of just ₹30.25 crore at the box office. The Rohit Shetty film, which released over the Christmas weekend, earned ₹6.50 crore on its opening day. It earned ₹6.25 crore on Saturday and ₹8 crore on Sunday, but the collection dropped sharply from Monday onwards.
The Varun Sharma, Pooja Hegde and Jacqueline Fernandez starrer comedy collected ₹1.75 crore nett on Thursday as weekday numbers continued to decline. If this extends to the second weekend, Cirkus will have a hard time even reaching ₹40 crore.
The Hindi film also continues to face competition from Hollywood sci-fi film Avatar The Way of Water, which has had another solid week after its December 16 release in India. James Cameron’s film is on track to become the highest-grossing Hollywood film.

According to the trade website, Box Office India, Cirkus’ loss can only be covered by its satellite, digital and music rights which are worth around ₹135 crore. The film also received poor reviews from both audiences and critics.
Based on William Shakespeare’s play The Comedy of Errors, Cirkus is also said to have been inspired by Gulzar’s Angoor (1982) starring Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Varma. The Cirkus ensemble featured several Rohit Shetty regulars including Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra, Siddharth Jadhav, Mukesh Tiwari, Vrajesh Hirji, Ashwini Kalsekar, Murali Sharma, Tiku Talsania and Sulbha Arya. Ranveer Singh and Varun also have double roles in the film. Ranveer’s wife actor Deepika Padukone also made a cameo in the song Karant Laga.
Along with Cirkus, Ranveer’s last two films, 83 (2021) and Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2022) failed at the box office. The actor will next be seen in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani opposite Alia Bhatt. The love story, which also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi, is set to hit the theaters on April 28, 2023. He will be pitted against Mani Ratnam’s multi-starrer Ponniyan Selvan 2 which picks up his saga in another film.
