Google has announced plans to launch Bard, an artificial intelligence (AI) based chat software to rival ChatGPT.

It uses its own language model – LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications). The statement comes just days after Google CEO Sundar Pichai detailed the company’s progress during an earnings call.

The conversational chatbot is based on LaMDA, the language model for Google’s dialog application system, and has been in development for several years.

In a blog post, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Bard AI was going out for testing with plans to make it more widely available “in the coming weeks.”

The blog post further states that the software will pull data from the web to provide fresh, high-quality feedback. Google is pitching it as “an outlet for creativity, and a launchpad for curiosity, helping you explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old or learn more about the best strikers in football right now”.

Like ChatGPT, Bard will source its responses from a limited version of its base language model to reduce computing power and reach a wider audience.

Some publications, however, point to key details between the two products from the Rickel Tech companies. Forbes stated in an article that ChatGPT will be made available on a stand-alone basis and may be available through an API (Application Programming Interface). There is no such word about Bard AI. Also, ChatGPT is available to the public for free (although there is a paid version called ChatGPT Plus).

Google Bard is not currently accessible for public testing, but select people have access. Google is producing a “lightweight model of LAMDA” that uses very little computational resources.

Google has been working on its language model for some time, but the corporation has halted its public release following allegations made by one of its employees.
